House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Brett Guthrie, R-Ky., said that Elon Musk “never mentioned” or raised any objections to the “big, beautiful bill” in the hours after the bill passed in the House.
Guthrie made the comments in an interview with Politico on Tuesday at its annual Energy Summit in Washington, D.C.
“I went directly from that vote straight to a breakfast with Elon, and he never mentioned the bill that morning,” Guthrie told the outlet.
However, Musk last week kicked off a firestorm by calling the megabill, which will fund President Donald Trump’s domestic policy agenda, a “disgusting abomination.”
“This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it,” he said in a June 3 post to X.
The billionaire’s comments surprised GOP congressional leaders and set off a dayslong feud with Trump that played out over social media.
The president suggested Musk was lashing out over Trump’s decision to cut out the EV mandates and yank the nomination of Musk’s choice for NASA, Jared Isaacman.
Regardless, Guthrie said he heard no objections from Musk.
“He talked about AI; he talked about all this stuff that [was] energy,” Guthrie said. “Never mentioned the bill. And the bill had just been voted.”
