While presidential immunity may protect former President Barack Obama, it won’t shield Obama-era officials if they committed crimes in an effort to undermine Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign and presidency, former Trump foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos said Saturday on Newsmax.
Papadopoulos responded to the recent declassification of intelligence documents ordered by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. Gabbard claimed the documents show senior Obama administration officials manufactured parts of the 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment that concluded Russia interfered in the 2016 election to help Trump.
“Look, what this recent declassified declassification really showcases is that there was never an investigation into President Trump,” Papadopoulos told “America Right Now.” “But what there actually was was the overt effort to plant dirt on President Trump from the highest levels of the Obama administration, including President Obama himself.”
He likened the situation to authoritarian crackdowns.
“Josef Stalin has a very famous quote where he said, ‘Show me the man and I’ll show you the crime.’ Usually, when tinpot dictatorships or totalitarian states or communist states like the Soviet Union weaponize a legal system in pursuit of political power, stifle dissent, or maintain power, they’re universally condemned,” he said.
“What really happened during Obamagate is not only did the White House and the intelligence community collude, but the mainstream media itself propagated those same talking points with complete disregard for the utmost facts.”
He said the declassified materials point to Obama’s direct involvement.
“The facts showcased that it wasn’t [John] Brennan, it wasn’t [James] Comey, and it wasn’t [Hillary] Clinton at the helm of this operation. But Barack Obama himself was pulling all of the strings.
“Now, the Supreme Court has ruled that presidents have immunity when it comes to official actions when they’re in office. I don’t believe that insulates Obama’s underlings or his cohorts or those who might have committed crimes on his behalf,” he said.
Gabbard’s release of the documents prompted immediate pushback from Democrats, who say she mischaracterized the intelligence community’s findings.
